How Long Does Concrete Take? Curing, Weather and Timing

How long concrete takes to pour and cure in Santa Clarita, when you can walk and drive on it, and how heat, wind, rain and cold nights change the plan.

How Long Does Concrete Take? Curing, Weather and Timing

Most home pours are placed and finished in one morning. The waiting comes afterward. Heat is the main weather risk in this valley, and wind is the second.

How long does concrete take to cure?

Concrete reaches most of its strength in the first week and its design strength at about 28 days. It keeps hardening slowly after that. Curing means keeping moisture in the slab during those first days, with curing compound, wet coverings or plastic. In dry Santa Clarita air, skipping that step costs real strength.

How long before I can walk on new concrete?

You can walk on new concrete after one to two days in normal weather. Keep dogs, bikes and patio furniture off for a few more days, since sharp points mark a young surface.

How long before I can drive on new concrete?

Wait about seven days before you drive on new concrete with a car or light pickup. Keep motorhomes, loaded trailers and moving trucks off for the full 28 days. Do not turn the steering wheel while parked in the first weeks, because it scuffs the surface.

How long does it take to pour a driveway?

For a typical driveway, allow one to two days to remove the old slab, grade and set forms, then one morning to pour and finish. How long it takes to pour a driveway grows with size, slope and stamping. Add time before that for an encroachment permit if the approach is included, and for HOA approval.

Can concrete be poured in the rain?

Concrete should not be poured in the rain if it is steady, because water on the surface weakens the top layer. A brief shower on a covered slab is manageable. Our rain falls mostly between December and March, so winter pours are booked with an eye on the forecast and sometimes moved a day.

Is it too hot to pour concrete in a Santa Clarita summer?

It is too hot to pour in the afternoon on a 100-degree day, but not too hot to pour that day. Summer work is done at dawn. The base is dampened, the mix may include a retarder, the crew is sized so finishing keeps up, and curing starts at once. Santa Ana wind days in fall get the same treatment, with windbreaks or an evaporation retardant.

Can concrete be poured in cold or freezing weather?

Yes, with care, and on the valley floor it is seldom an issue. Santa Clarita gets some freezing nights in December and January, but days warm up quickly. Acton and Agua Dulce are colder. If a freezing night is forecast, the fresh slab is covered with insulating blankets, and a hard freeze before the concrete has gained strength is a reason to wait.

What is the best time of year to pour concrete here?

The best time of year is fall after the Santa Ana winds ease, and spring. Days are mild and rain is unlikely. That said, we pour in every month. Summer needs early starts and winter needs a flexible date.

Can I use salt or deicer on new concrete?

Do not use deicer or salt on concrete in its first winter. Most of our service area never needs it. In Acton and other high spots where ice forms, use sand for grip instead. Fertilizer and pool salt also attack a young surface, so rinse spills off.

When can I water the lawn, park the trash bins or put the spa back?

Sprinklers can run the next day, and in fact a damp slab cures better. Bins and light furniture can go back after about three days. A filled spa or a loaded shed should wait for the full cure.
